FIATA, in French «Fédération Internationale des Associations de Transitaires et Assimilés», in English «International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations», in German «Internationale Föderation der Spediteurorganisationen», was founded in Vienna/Austria on May 31, 1926.
FIATA, a non-governmental organisation, represents today an industry covering approximately 40,000 forwarding and logistics firms, also known as the «Architects of Transport», employing around 8 — 10 million people in 150 countries.
FIATA has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (inter alia ECE, ESCAP, ESCWA), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
It is recognised as representing the freight forwarding industry by many other governmental organisations, governmental authorities, private international organisations in the field of transport such as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Union of Railways (UIC), the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the World Customs Organization (WCO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), etc. In summary FIATA is the largest non-governmental organisation in the field of transportation. Its influence is worldwide.
The Association of International Freight Forwarders of Ukraine (AIFFU) today includes 122 full and associate members.
The Association members service 70—75 per cent of all transit cargo shipments through Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian forwarders consider complicated customs and border rules, additional dues collected from transit carriers to be a serious obstacle.
AIFFU together with another Ukrainian association of forwarders — Ukrvneshtrans has consistently spoken out for dues reduction and customs procedure simplification. It was due to their activities that the Government decided to introduce uniform customs duties at the border last year. These duties combine seven different collections and have been reduced by almost 30 per cent.
AIFFU is a member of FIATA and strives to participate actively in its work. One of AIFFU trends is the implementation of FIATA documents in the Ukrainian forwarding market.
FONASBA was formed in 1969 to speak with authority on behalf of the shipping profession in so far as shipbrokers and agents are concerned, to promote fair and equitable practices in those professions, to co-operate with other international maritime bodies and to consult and advise on any matters of concern to the shipping industry.
Full membership of the Federation is open only to national associations or similar organisations of shipbrokers and agents and is confined to one such body per country. Associate membership may be granted to other shipping entities, including individual companies, at the discretion of the Council, while Club membership is granted to companies and organisations that provide specific insurance, consultancy or information services to shipbrokers and agents.
The current Full membership of the Federation comprises nearly 40 countries represented by national organisations with a further 7 countries represented by Associate members. There are 4 Club members. The Federation conducts its business through a secretariat based in London which supports an Executive Committee comprising the President, Vice Presidents and Chairmen of Committees. Operating as a standing committee of FONASBA is the European Community Association, ECASBA , a federation of the national associations of the maritime member and applicant member nations of the European Union. ECASBA exists specifically to provide a contact point with the European Commission and those of its directorates that have an involvement with shipping.
FONASBA also has two additional standing committees, one of which handles liner and tramp matters and the other chartering and documentary affairs. These committees are in turn supported by sub-committees reflecting specialised activities such as tanker broking and sale and purchase. FONASBA has consultative status with UNCTAD, as well as close associations with BIMCO, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO, amongst other shipping bodies.
Association of Maritime Agencies of Ukraine (AMAU) was founded in 1993 by voluntary consent of businessmen carrying out functions of shipbrokers and agents of foreign and domestic cargo vessels.
The main objects and tasks of AMAU are protection of lawful interests of its members, every kind of assistance to formation and strengthening civilised agency service market in Ukraine based on strictly observance of laws and rules of business ethics, as essential condition of progressive development of national transport system. AMAU is a member of International Federation of National Associations of Shipbrokers and Agents (FONASBA).
The TT Club is the international transport and logistics industry’s leading provider of insurance and related risk management services. Established in 1968, as a mutual association, the TT Club specialises in the insurance of liabilities and equipment for multi-modal operators.

Having developed in step with the multi-modal industry, the TT Club is recognised as an independent industry forum, liaising with national and international trade and government associations, including FIATA, IAPH and ICHCA. Since its inception, the TT Club has grown steadily in terms of premium income, at an average rate of 10% per annum for the last 20 years, rising from net premiums of US$14.5m in 1980 to US$ 179.3m in 2005.
Customer loyalty has been an essential factor in this growth. Indeed, 94% of Members stay with the TT Club at renewal each year.
World Cargo Alliance, Inc. (WCA), the largest and strongest network of independent air and ocean forwarders in the world, was established as a Colorado (USA) Corporation in 1998 with no freight forwarders in ownership thus preserving group neutrality. WCA is the only network that has full time neutral management and this is the reason why our members have more confidence and trust in providing specific needed information about their companies. All other networks are managed by «a few» of their members and this often tends to have the network going a direction that all members do not wish to support.
WCA was founded by its President, David L. Yokeum (born 1949), who has been involved in the development and management of international freight forwarder groups since 1987. During that time, he has visited over 4,000 independent forwarders at their offices around the world and gathered an unparalleled knowledge of their needs. He has founded two exclusive networks, still in successful operation, whose limitations as discussed above caused him to design WCA as a neutral, non-exclusive group and thus best positioned to meet the needs of its members.
WCA Vice President, Mark Mairowitz (born 1964) has almost 15 years experience in the freight transportation industry, 10 years in managerial positions. For four years, Mark was Import Logistics Manager of a large garment manufacturer, directing a worldwide sourcing and import program from New York City. Prior to joining WCA, he was Director of Operations for a Caribbean-based NVOCC headquartered in Miami, Florida. Mark’s strong industry background permits him to work well with members, sharing their perspective in helping them to overcome difficulties and build business.
In June of 2002, WCA opened its Asian Regional Office in Bangkok Thailand. The establishment of this, WCA’s first overseas branch, has better facilitated many of the projects in which Asian members have demonstrated interest and has further supported the efforts of all WCA Asian members with their desire to cooperate more and work more closely with WCA partners worldwide. WCA’s European Regional office commenced operations in Bremen Germany in September 2003. WCA will establish a Shanghai branch office in the world’s fastest growing market, China, in January of 2004.
